    Things to observe

Bathing elephants - Would you like to see dozens of elephants take a bath in the river? You can down the street from the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. It is quite incredible to see these giant creatures play in the water like they have no weight.  While you are watching them you might want to sit down and enjoy a cup of tea. Restaurants there have balconies overlooking the river. If you are interested, you can feed a baby elephant with a nursing bottle before the bath time. You need to buy a ticket for this activity. Finally, make sure you check their activity timings.

Charms - Take a look at bumpers of cars, tuk-tuks, and busses. Can you notice the ones that have chilis hanging from their bumpers? It is a tasty good luck and protection charm. If you look carefully you will see a lot of them.

    Do it like locals

Lotus offering - Make a lotus flower offering in one (or more) of the temples you visit. Usually, there is someone who sells these flowers outside the temples.

King Coconut - You'll come across tables full of coconuts on the side of the roads. Stop and have a refreshing fresh king coconut juice for a dollar.

    Sri Lanka Train Ride

    Places to mingle

Sri Lankans are the most welcoming and friendliest people. What is better than hanging out with locals to understand their culture?
Train Rides - Scenic train rides last a couple of hours. There is plenty of time to make a friend, and enjoy the view.
Vilharamahadevi Park in Colombo - I've seen a lot of locals hanging out in here. Usually, they are happy to chat.
